Robert Lannoy

Robert Lannoy was born  June 18, 1915 in Saint-Amand-les-Eaux. He began his musical studies with theory, violin, and bassoon at the Paris Conservatory. In both 1938 and 1946 he won the Prix de Rome.  He was director of the Lille Conservatory for thirty-three years. He was a soldier in the 5th regiment d’infanterie de ligne de Coubevoie. He became a Prisoner of War in Czechoslovakia and sent to Stalag XVIIB in Austria. After numerous failed attempts at escape, he was sent to Rawa Ruska in 1942, then to Belzec. He was liberated by American troops, and in 1945 returned to France. He became known as a composer of film music, one of which was Le Retour (Homecoming) which told the stories of prisoners returning home following Word War 2. Lannoy died in June, 1979. (1)
